Members of American University’s Graduate Leadership Council (GLC) and Graduate Student Council (GSC) come together to exchange ideas, strengthen collaboration, and shape what’s next for the graduate student community.

The American University Graduate Leadership Council (GLC) and Graduate Student Council (GSC) came together for their first joint retreat, creating space for graduate student leaders to connect, exchange ideas, and look ahead to the academic year.


From CAS, Kogod, SOC, SOE, SIS and SPA—student leaders from across American University are coming together to represent our diverse voices, ideas, and experiences.

The retreat was more than an opportunity to meet. It was a chance to have meaningful conversations about the graduate student experience, identify opportunities for collaboration, and think creatively about how student leadership can better serve the AU graduate community.

Throughout the retreat, members of both councils shared perspectives, discussed priorities, and began developing ideas for the year ahead. From building stronger community connections to creating meaningful events, opportunities, and initiatives for graduate students, the focus remained clear: put students at the center of the work.

A strong graduate community requires collaboration. By bringing the GLC and GSC together, the retreat marked an important step toward creating stronger communication and coordination between graduate student leaders.

While each council has its own role, both share a common goal—to advocate for graduate students, strengthen community, and help create an experience where students feel connected, represented, and supported.

We listened. We brainstormed. We planned. Now, it’s time to put those ideas into action.

The academic year is only beginning, and there is much more to come.
