Building Community: The Role of the Graduate Leadership Council
Graduate school can be many things at once: exciting, challenging, rewarding, and sometimes overwhelming. Between classes, research, internships, jobs, and personal responsibilities, it is easy for students to feel disconnected from the broader university community. At American University, the Graduate Leadership Council (GLC) is working to change that.
Representing more than 3,800 graduate students, the GLC serves as the collective voice of graduate education at AU. But its impact extends far beyond advocacy. The council is building spaces where students can connect, grow professionally, and find a sense of belonging during their time on campus.
At its core, the GLC exists to make graduate life more meaningful. Whether through networking events, professional development workshops, or direct engagement with university leadership, the council works to ensure that graduate student perspectives are heard and valued. Its mission is simple but important: help students make the most of their graduate experience while addressing the issues that matter to them.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, the council is led by President Nisham Limbu and a team of dedicated student leaders, including Adrianna Pollard, Laraib Nisar, Tino Chimusoro, Galilea Sejas-Machado and Sara Baloch. Together, they represent a diverse group of graduate students committed to strengthening the AU community and creating opportunities that benefit students across every discipline.
What makes the GLC particularly unique is its ability to bring together leadership from across the university. Graduate student councils from the College of Arts and Sciences, Kogod School of Business, School of Communication, School of Education, School of International Service, and School of Public Affairs all have a seat at the table. This collaborative model allows students from different academic backgrounds to work toward shared goals while addressing the specific needs of their respective schools.
The result is a vibrant network of student organizations and advocacy groups that enrich campus life. From the Analytics and AI Club and the American Statistical Association chapter to the First-Generation Graduate Society, Graduate Black Student Union, Disabled Graduate Student Union, and Kogod Women in Business, graduate students have countless opportunities to connect with peers who share their interests, experiences, and professional ambitions.
In an era where professional networks often begin long before graduation, these organizations provide students with more than extracurricular activities. They offer leadership experience, mentorship opportunities, industry connections, and lifelong relationships that can shape future careers. The GLC serves as the bridge that helps make those opportunities accessible to graduate students across campus.
