A German-Korean international student, Jo’s academic journey has been shaped by a global perspective. She attended an international school in Germany before earning her undergraduate degree in Global Affairs with a minor in Conflict Analysis and Resolution in South Korea. Her studies emphasized the dynamics of conflict, trauma, and healing. She also worked as an English teacher in South Korea before moving to Washington, D.C., for her graduate studies.

Beyond academics, Jo has a strong background in research and editorial work. She serves as a senior editor for the Journal of International Service and as a researcher for the United States Atrocities Accountability Project (USAAP). She is also part of Genocide Watch, where she supports research and advocacy efforts to identify early warning signs of genocide and advance policies for prevention and accountability. Her work reflects a deep commitment to humanitarian advocacy and the promotion of justice and human rights.

Johanna is also an avid language learner, driven by a desire to enhance cross-cultural communication and gain deeper insights into diverse societies and cultures. At the moment she is learning Russian and Hausa.

Committed to student leadership and community engagement, she represents all AU graduate students as Vice President of the Graduate Leadership Council (GLC), where she strives to foster positive change on campus.
