Biography

Stella is a master’s student at American University’s School of International Service, pursuing a degree in Global Governance, Politics, and Security. A proud immigrant from Mexico, she holds dual B.A. degrees in International Politics, with a focus on International Relations, and Linguistics, specializing in Legal Linguistics and Semantics, from Pennsylvania State University. Her academic journey has been shaped by a deep commitment to understanding the intersection of language, law, and governance in international affairs.

With a strong foundation in policy research and global security, Stella has explored issues of governance, diplomacy, and legal interpretation, particularly in how language influences political and legal systems. Her research in the Washington D.C. Latinx Language Identity Project focuses on Spanish and English in daily life examines language as a tool for access, inclusion, and policy development within Latino communities in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. She is particularly interested in how governance structures can better serve multilingual populations and enhance public policy through effective communication.

Beyond academia, Stella has been deeply engaged in leadership and public service. They have served as Treasurer and Merchandise Chair for Penn State’s Empowering Women in Law chapter, held multiple leadership positions within Penn State Archery, she currently is serving as Director of Operations in the Association of Latino Career Enhancement, and participated in legal and political advocacy initiatives, including the Model International Criminal Court and the Pennsylvania YMCA Youth and Government program. Her work has been driven by a passion for civic engagement, international cooperation, and equitable policymaking. In her free time, she participates in several book clubs across the country. This year her reading goal is 100 books, 25 more than last year. She enjoys cooking and baking for others, practicing archery, playing video games, and visiting different libraries and museums in the DC area.

I am excited to announce my candidacy for President of the Graduate Leadership Council. As  a dedicated graduate student at the School of International Service, I am committed to fostering  an inclusive, engaged, and resourceful graduate community that prioritizes diversity, equity,  inclusion, transparency, and advocacy. 

My leadership experience spans multiple organizations, including serving as Treasurer and  Merchandise Chair for Penn State Empowering Women in Law and holding key roles in Penn  State Archery and Model International Criminal Court. Through these positions, I have  developed strong organizational, advocacy, and communication skills that allow me to  effectively represent and support our diverse graduate student body. Additionally, my time as  a public servant for the City of Austin has also prepared me to represent my community to  stakeholders. 

As GLC President, my primary goals are to enhance cross-school collaboration, expand  professional development opportunities, and advocate for student needs at the institutional  level. I will work to ensure that all students have equitable access to networking events, funding  resources, and academic support. I am committed to fostering a more inclusive environment  where every voice is heard and valued. Additionally, I will promote transparency in decision making processes and work to strengthen advocacy efforts to address the evolving needs of our  graduate community. 

With my experience in leadership, public service, and advocacy, I am confident in my ability to lead the GLC with integrity, inclusivity, and a vision for meaningful change. I look forward to the opportunity to serve and strengthen our graduate community.
